In 2020, SJAP President, Thomas Allison, was elected to the Faculty Diversity Committee (FDC) at the University of La Verne to a three-year term. During the three-year term, Thomas served two one-year terms as chair of the FDC. Thomas is deeply committed to structural and systemic change that produces equitable outcomes for all members of the community. This Spring Thomas concluded the last year of the three-year term on the FDC.

Under Thomas’ leadership, the FDC, among other things, accomplished the following:

  1. The passage of an Adjunct Bill of Rights,

  2. The creation of a wrap-around Faculty Mentorship Program,

  3. Establishing a new faculty governance committee designed to give more faculty voice in campus governance,

  4. Collaborated to provide free immigration resources to students, staff, faculty, and administration, and

  5. Established a campus-wide culture and community taskforce to create a thriving environment for all campus personnel.

Thomas will continue to collaborate with university leadership to bring these programs and others to complete implementation and sustainability. Universities play an integral role in training and defining the community’s workforce. Public and private workers execute the activities in a system that produce equitable access to public goods and resources.
